poem post #10

road ravaged (a fourteen-second love affair)

Why
would
you do
such a thing?
Why
in that dim hour
by that cold roadside—
with
your dusty satchel
there beside you
on the ground
and
the bullweeds bearing witness—
why
catch my heart
like that?

Please note:
I do not ask you ‘how.’

How
was a simple matter:
your hand coming up
to touch your hair
just so
and
the light falling all around you.
Your light.

I am a living thing.
Without the light
I’m done for.
So of course
I needed that.
And, though
it ended
much too soon,
I feel that I should
thank you
whoever you were
and continue to be.
